History

In 1899, the club hosted its first George Washington Banquet, starting a Creve Coeur Club tradition that has lasted more than 100 years. The original George Washington Banquets were stag affairs, featuring several speakers and lasting as long as six hours. In later years, wives were allowed to attend, but sat in the balcony to watch as their husbands dined. Today, hundreds of men and women attend this annual banquet to celebrate the man whose courage, foresight and humility shaped our infant country and provided a shining example of leadership.  Though the banquet has changed over the years, the tradition of bringing luminaries as speakers to a lavish formal dinner to enlighten and entertain club members and guests has endured.
